It is a moment of immense pleasure and satisfaction for me as I have been a part of Onam Celebration 2009 @ Loyola College. We, around 230 students and 10 teachers gathered on 23 August 2009 Sunday to celebrate this wonderful and unique festival of Kerala with great pomp and vigour. The programme started @ 8.00 am with the Inter-departmental Pookkalam Competition in which 10 teams participated. It was followed by a meeting @ Lawrence Sundaram Auditorium by 10.30 am and the renowned playback singers and the Kerala state award winners for the best playback singers in 2007 Vijay Yesudass and Shwetha Mohan came as the chief guests. Keeping aside all the official proceedings of the programme, both Vijay and Shwetha became just like two among the audience and initiated a musical extravaganza which all the students and teachers enjoyed with full spirit. Principal Rev.Dr.Albert Muthumalai SJ came to convey his greetings and regards to all.
After the meeting, we witnessed different traditional art forms of Kerala like Thiruvathirakkali. Tug of war was also conducted in which the 2nd year UG boys defeated the PG boys and the 2nd year PG girls lost to their 1st year counterparts. Finally, we had the delicious Kerala sadya which reminded us of the typical Onam celebration @ Kerala itself. After all, the programme proved the tendency of Keralites of unitedly celebrating such festivals wherever they are. It was the first time in the history of Loyola that a Kerala festival is celebrated in such a way and its joy was evident on all the teachers present. The names to be specially mentioned for the success of this programme include Priyanka, Justin, Jose, Deepu, Varun, Abraham, Reny etc. Shijo, Sachin, Joseph, Unni..... are also remembered for their active involvement in executing the responsibilities assigned to them. It was a day which we will never forget................

ReplyDeleteEventhough I was there for 3 years , we were not able to imagine that such a programme can be conducted with this much pomp and vigour. I am also reminded of the difficulties faced by Mallus there both in the College and in the Hostel from the part of the authorities as described by you when I watched the programme on Asianet. Kudos to you all who tried to uplift the identity of our tradition and culture and my special congrats to the team of boys who presented the dance with such an artistic perfection and aesthetic synthesis.
